NEW OFF-THE-SHELF ORTHOTIC CODES

In February 2012, The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued guidance that initially identified specific Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes that were considered Off-the-Shelf (OTS) orthoses. The list of HCPCS codes that were finalized as part of this review as OTS orthotics, effective January 1, 2014, are available for download at http://www.cms.gov/Medicare/Medicare-Fee-for-Service-Payment/DMEPOSFeeSched/OTS_Orthotics.html on the CMS website.

Change Request (CR) 8839 announces that in order to identify prefabricated single and double upright knee orthoses that are furnished in a variety of standard sizes and do not require the skills of an expert to measure and fit to the individual; the following OTS codes will be added to the HCPCS code set, effective October 1, 2014:

  • K0901- Knee orthosis (KO), single upright, thigh and calf, with adjustable flexion and extension joint (unicentric or polycentric), medial-lateral and rotation control, with or without varus/valgus adjustment, prefabricated, off-the-shelf; and
  • K0902 -Knee orthosis (KO), double upright, thigh and calf, with adjustable flexion and extension joint (unicentric or polycentric), medial-lateral and rotation control, with or without varus/valgus adjustment, prefabricated, off-the-shelf;

For questions about correct coding, contact the PDAC Contact Center at (877) 735-1326 during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday, or e-mail the PDAC by completing the DME PDAC Contact Form.
