NOTE: Revised deadline information regarding the K0009 MANUAL WHEELCHAIR – CODING VERIFICATION REVIEW REQUIREMENT – DEADLINE EXTENDED was posted to the PDAC website February 28, 2013. This article is titled REVISED – K0009 MANUAL WHEELCHAIR – CODING VERIFICATION REVIEW REQUIREMENT – UPDATE, posted 2/28/13.

It has been previously communicated that Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies (DMEPOS) products listed on the PDAC website with HCPCS code K0009 (OTHER MANUAL WHEELCHAIR/BASE) would be end dated effective September 11, 2012. This date has been extended. The new effective date is March 31, 2013. Manufacturers are reminded to submit a new coding verification application to the PDAC for review for products currently coded as K0009.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has set a deadline for receipt of coding verification applications of December 3, 2012.  All manufacturers who submit valid and timely applications will be notified on March 1, 2013, of the coding verification results. Applications received after December 3, 2012, will not be included in the March 1, 2013 coding announcement.  In addition, any reclassifications as of October 1, 2012, of products previously classified as K0009 are rescinded until the code verification of all products under code K0009 is completed.  Manufacturers of these products will also be notified on March 1, 2013, of the coding verification results.

Effective for claims with dates of service on or after April 1, 2013, the only products which may be billed to Medicare using code K0009 are those for which a written coding verification has been made by the PDAC contractor and that are listed in the Product Classification List in DMECS maintained on the PDAC website, https://www.dmepdac.com/dmecsapp/. Products which have not received coding verification review from the PDAC must be billed with code E1399.

The PDAC coding verification application required for these products is the Manual Wheelchairs application. This application is located on the PDAC website, https://www.dmepdac.com/review/apps_check.html.

For questions about correct coding, contact the PDAC Contact Center at (877) 735-1326 during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday, or e-mail the PDAC by completing the DME PDAC Contact Form located on the PDAC website: https://www.dmepdac.com/.
